FG to Release N8bn to Clear Debts of Stranded Foreign Scholarship Students
The Federal Government has approved the disbursement of about N8 billion to settle outstanding obligations owed to Nigerian students studying abroad under government scholarship schemes who have been affected by delayed funding.
The intervention is intended to clear accumulated arrears and ensure that the impacted students can continue their studies without further financial disruptions.
Authorities explained that the funds will cover unpaid tuition fees, living allowances, and other overdue payments that have built up over time. The initiative is also aimed at stabilizing the foreign scholarship programme and restoring confidence in its management.
Some beneficiaries had reportedly struggled with unpaid stipends and tuition fees, leading to difficulties such as housing challenges and threats of academic interruption. These issues had drawn concern from families and education stakeholders.
The government said the payment plan is designed to ease the burden on the affected students and address the long-standing funding gaps in the scheme.
Officials also noted that reforms are being considered to improve the administration of foreign scholarships, with a focus on better planning, budgeting, and monitoring to prevent similar cases in the future.
Overall, the move is part of efforts to strengthen education support systems and ensure that students on government sponsorship complete their programmes without financial hindrances.
