COREN Directs Engineering Programmes to Admit Students According to Approved Quotas

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has stated that engineering and technology programmes in tertiary institutions must limit student admissions to the quotas approved by relevant regulatory authorities.

The council said the decision is aimed at enhancing the standard of engineering education by ensuring that institutions admit only the number of students they have the facilities and personnel to adequately train.

COREN explained that some institutions have been admitting students beyond their approved capacity, putting pressure on available resources such as laboratories, workshops, classrooms, equipment, and academic staff. The council noted that excessive admissions could affect the quality of practical training and the overall competence of engineering graduates.

The regulatory body emphasized that strict compliance with approved admission limits would help improve learning conditions and ensure that students receive proper instruction and hands-on experience during their studies.

The move is part of ongoing efforts by COREN to strengthen quality assurance and maintain professional standards in engineering education across Nigeria. Universities seeking to increase their admission capacity will need to improve their infrastructure and staffing levels before receiving approval for higher quotas.

Stakeholders in the education sector believe that enforcing admission limits could contribute to producing better-trained engineers and addressing some of the challenges facing engineering education in the country.
