Why teacher education must be prioritised – NCCE boss
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Dr. Angela Ajala, has emphasised the importance of strengthening teacher education in Nigeria, noting that the overall quality of the education system depends largely on how well teachers are trained.
She stated that teaching should be regarded as a core profession rather than a secondary option, since teachers are responsible for preparing all other professionals in society. In her view, weak teacher training eventually leads to broader failures across different sectors because every field relies on properly educated learners.
Dr. Ajala also pointed out that Colleges of Education are central to national development and must be supported with better standards, updated curricula, and improved teaching methods, including the use of digital tools.
She added that neglecting teacher education would undermine efforts to improve the entire education system, stressing that meaningful progress in education can only be achieved when teacher preparation is taken seriously.
