The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a major initiative aimed at encouraging academic excellence and rewarding outstanding research in higher institutions. The programme, known as the National Laureate Prize, offers financial rewards of up to ₦20 million to exceptional student researchers, signaling a strong commitment to building a knowledge-based economy.

The National Laureate Prize is designed to recognise top quality dissertations and theses from students in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country. By providing both monetary rewards and national recognition, the initiative seeks to highlight the importance of research and academic achievement.

Under the scheme, prizes are distributed across different academic levels. Undergraduate students can receive at least ₦5 million, master’s degree holders are eligible for ₦10 million, while doctoral candidates may be awarded up to ₦20 million.

The Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, described the programme as a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector by placing greater emphasis on research and innovation. Implementation and Management

A 10-member National Laureate Prize Committee, led by Abubakar Sambo, will oversee the administration of the programme. The committee will be responsible for reviewing submissions, selecting winners, and ensuring a transparent and credible process.

Funding for the initiative will be sourced from the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank along with its partners, ensuring the programme’s sustainability without excessive reliance on government funding.

Institutions are expected to nominate outstanding academic works, while the committee also has the authority to identify exceptional research independently.

Timeline and Key Activities

For the 2026 edition, submissions are scheduled to begin in May through the official platform. The review process will take place between June and September, with winners to be announced at a National Laureate Gala in November in Abuja.

Recognising National Heroes

In addition to financial rewards, some prizes will be named after notable Nigerians to honour their contributions to society. The first edition will pay tribute to Stella Adadevoh, acknowledging her bravery and service.
