UNICEF Collaborates with Benue SUBEB to Enhance Basic Education

In a significant step toward improving basic education in Benue State, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has joined forces with the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). The partnership aims to tackle educational challenges and boost learning outcomes across the state, with both organizations emphasizing strategic interventions based on accurate data and evidence.
The collaboration was highlighted during a recent visit to the SUBEB headquarters in Makurdi, where UNICEF representatives, led by international education consultant Michelle Boujikian, engaged with state officials to discuss ways to strengthen the education sector.
Tackling Educational Challenges
UNICEF emphasized its commitment to supporting children in need, especially those in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, ensuring they have access to quality education. The discussions underscored the importance of using reliable data to design programs that effectively reach all children.
SUBEB’s Initiatives and Goals
SUBEB Executive Chairman Grace Adagba expressed gratitude for UNICEF’s support, noting the impact of provided learning materials and resources highlighted during the Benue Education Summit 2026. Surveys conducted by SUBEB revealed gaps such as insufficient school supplies, weak school feeding programs, and low parental involvement.
Adagba pointed to the “Building Rights to Access and Compulsory Education for Un‑enrolled Pupils” (BRACE‑UP) initiative, launched by Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, as a key platform to re enroll out of school children. Strengthened collaboration with UNICEF is expected to support BRACE‑UP through parental training, school feeding programs, and assistance for vulnerable families.
Future Collaboration
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to inclusive education, especially for children affected by displacement or poverty. SUBEB also called on other development partners and corporate organizations to contribute to improving the state’s education sector.
By combining UNICEF’s global expertise with SUBEB’s local knowledge, the collaboration aims to close gaps in access, quality, and equity, ensuring that all children in Benue State receive safe and quality basic education.
