Students Excel at ‘Engineering & You’ STEM Debate in Ogun

Secondary school students in Ogun State were recently celebrated for their achievements at the ‘Engineering & You’ STEM Debate Competition, an initiative designed to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among young learners.

Organised by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, in collaboration with philanthropist Prince Engineer Yemisi Shyllon, the event concluded with a prize-giving ceremony at the NSE Secretariat in Abeokuta on March 10, 2026.

Fostering STEM Skills

The competition, which began in May 2025, featured participants from 32 schools across the state, including both public and private institutions. Conducted in a debate format, the event aimed to develop students’ critical thinking, public speaking, and scientific reasoning skills.

Speaking at the ceremony, Engr. Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, Branch Chairman of NSE Abeokuta, highlighted that the initiative goes beyond competition. It seeks to nurture future innovators, enhance students’ ability to articulate technical concepts, and inspire them to pursue STEM-related careers.

Winners and Recognition

The top performers were Adelakun Stephen Iyanuoluwa and Akinola Saheedat Idowu from Ebenezer Grammar School, who claimed first place. They were awarded a trophy, cash prizes, medals, plaques, and certificates for their outstanding performance.

Officials lauded the students’ dedication and intellect, while representatives from the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology praised the initiative for promoting STEM education across the state.

Inspiring Future Innovators

Event sponsor Prince Engr. Yemisi Shyllon commended the organisers and participants for their commitment to academic excellence and reaffirmed his support for youth education. Organisers also urged increased investment in public schools, including better laboratories, facilities, and teacher development, to strengthen STEM learning.

The competition not only recognized individual achievement but also highlighted the importance of motivating young people to explore science and engineering as pathways to personal and national growth.
