Kano Governor Merges Education Ministries to Speed Up Reforms

The Governor of Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the merger of the Ministry of Higher Education with the Ministry of Education in Kano State as part of efforts to strengthen reforms in the state’s education sector.

The restructuring dissolves the separate Ministry of Higher Education and places its responsibilities under a unified Ministry of Education. According to the state government, the move is aimed at improving coordination, eliminating duplication of duties, and ensuring more efficient management of education across all levels.

Under the new arrangement, a Directorate of Higher Education will be established within the Ministry of Education to handle matters related to tertiary institutions. The directorate will be led by a Permanent Secretary and supported by officials responsible for overseeing universities, colleges, and other higher institutions in the state.

Agencies that previously operated under the Ministry of Higher Education, including the state scholarship board, will now function under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. Officials say this centralised structure will improve policy implementation and strengthen oversight in the sector.

The state government explained that the merger is part of broader efforts to reduce the cost of governance and improve efficiency in public administration. The governor also directed the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Head of Service to ensure a smooth transition during the restructuring process.

The development also affects the role of the state’s Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who previously served as Commissioner for Higher Education. With the ministry now dissolved, he will no longer hold that additional portfolio.

The government maintained that the reform reflects its commitment to improving the quality of education and strengthening governance within the sector. By bringing all levels of education under one ministry, the administration hopes to enhance coordination, planning, and overall performance in the state’s education system.
