Nigeria to Host 2025 WAICA Education Conference on Climate Change and Insurance

The Nigerian insurance industry is preparing to host the 2025 Education Conference of the West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA), scheduled for October 12–15, 2025, at the iconic Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos.

Organized by the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) on behalf of the Nigerian insurance market, the conference will bring together delegates from Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and other West African nations to deliberate on the evolving challenges and opportunities in the industry.
This year’s conference is themed: “The West African Insurer in the Face of Climate Change.” The event will highlight the critical role insurers play in safeguarding communities, economies, and livelihoods from the increasing threats posed by climate-related disasters.
Speaking ahead of the conference, Mr. Kunle Ahmed, Chairman of the Nigerian Insurers Association, said the gathering comes at a defining moment for the industry.
“Insurance is more than a financial safety net—it is a tool for resilience. In the face of climate change, insurers must rise to the challenge of protecting not only assets but also lives and livelihoods,” Ahmed stated.
He added that the conference would provide a platform for collaboration and innovation.
“This is an opportunity for West African insurers to share ideas, develop solutions, and build stronger partnerships that will allow us to mitigate risks and support sustainable growth across the region.”
Industry stakeholders also stressed the importance of aligning with global standards. Dr. Joseph Okeke, an insurance and risk management expert, explained that West African insurers cannot afford to lag behind.
“The global insurance industry is under increasing pressure to align with the Paris Agreement. This means adopting sustainable practices, integrating environmental risks into underwriting, and developing inclusive products that protect vulnerable populations,” he said.
Nigeria, with its strategic position as a regional hub, expanding insurance sector, and commitment to sustainable development, was described as the perfect host for the event.
Mrs. Yetunde Ilori, Director-General of the NIA, expressed confidence that Lagos would provide delegates with a rewarding experience.
“Lagos is not just Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, it is a city of culture, resilience, and hospitality. We are delighted to welcome our colleagues from across West Africa to share knowledge, strengthen bonds, and shape the future of our industry.”
With climate change already impacting millions across the continent, the 2025 WAICA Education Conference is expected to set the stage for bold conversations, actionable strategies, and stronger regional cooperation in building a more resilient insurance sector.
