Women’s Group Urges NDDC and NEDC to Equip Schools with Science Labs

A women’s advocacy group has called on Nigeria’s Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and North East Development Commission (NEDC) to invest in functional science laboratories in schools to improve science education.

At the 2026 International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Global Women’s Breakfast held in Effurun, Delta State, Women in Chemistry (WIC) highlighted the urgent need for well equipped laboratories, particularly to encourage students especially girls to pursue subjects like chemistry.

Dr. Sarah Nwinee, WIC Coordinator, noted that many schools lack basic lab facilities, leaving students without practical experience even when sitting for major exams like WAEC. She stressed that practical exposure builds confidence and makes science more engaging and accessible.

Under the theme “Many Voices, One Science,” WIC and participants urged development commissions and other agencies to strengthen resources for science education, emphasizing that modern laboratories not only improve academic outcomes but also foster innovation and technological growth in Nigeria.
