UNILAG Empowers Fresh Students with Entrepreneurial Skills

UNILAG Empowers Fresh Students with Entrepreneurial Skills

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has intensified efforts to cultivate entrepreneurial skills among its new students, aiming to reduce graduate unemployment and nurture future job creators.

In March 2026, UNILAG introduced the Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Business Incubation Certification (EIBIC) programme for first year and direct entry students. Organized by the university’s Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre (ESDC), this five day initiative attracted students from various faculties, offering them hands on exposure to business and innovation practices.

Practical Skills at the Core

The programme emphasizes practical learning alongside academic knowledge. Students engage in activities covering market research, business planning, design thinking, financial management, and digital marketing. Experienced business leaders, successful alumni, and industry experts serve as mentors, sharing insights that inspire students to consider entrepreneurship as a viable career path.

University Leadership Stresses Importance

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola highlighted the need for adaptability and an entrepreneurial mindset in a rapidly changing global economy, encouraging students to embrace these skills regardless of their field of study. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Afolabi Lesi noted Nigeria’s high graduate unemployment rate and emphasized that initiatives like EIBIC equip students with skills for self employment and business creation even before they graduate.

Bridging Theory and Practice

Beyond classroom sessions, EIBIC offers interactive workshops, networking with industry professionals, and practical guidance on leveraging digital tools to grow businesses. The programme ensures that students can connect theoretical knowledge with real world business experience.

Shaping Future Innovators

UNILAG’s approach reflects a broader understanding that higher education should go beyond academics to include enterprise skills. By engaging fresh students early, the university aims to foster a culture of innovation, critical thinking, and entrepreneurship, preparing them for both personal and national economic growth.
