Sokoto Journalists Join Forces with AGILE to Promote Girl‑Child Education

In a significant move to enhance educational opportunities for girls in Sokoto State, the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, has partnered with the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE). This collaboration aims to leverage media platforms to raise awareness about the importance of girls’ education and highlight AGILE’s initiatives across the region.

The partnership was formalized during a visit by the NUJ leadership to the AGILE State Project Implementation Unit. Chapel Chairman, Ankeli Emmanuel, emphasized the media’s critical role in spreading development stories widely, noting that the partnership would help showcase projects that benefit girls throughout the state and beyond.

Dr. Mansur Buhari, AGILE State Coordinator, welcomed the collaboration, stressing that working with the press fosters transparency and dispels concerns about media sensationalism. He highlighted that open communication between journalists and development programs strengthens trust and promotes the project’s objectives effectively.

Supported by the World Bank and implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education, AGILE seeks to improve access, retention, and completion of secondary education for girls aged 10–20. The program addresses infrastructure gaps, socio economic barriers, and community awareness to ensure girls stay in school.

In Sokoto, AGILE’s interventions include renovating classrooms, upgrading sanitation and water facilities, and providing conditional cash transfers to families to encourage consistent school attendance. These measures aim to reduce dropout rates and empower girls through education.

By partnering with journalists, AGILE hopes to amplify success stories and challenges alike, ensuring that the importance of girl‑child education receives sustained attention at both local and national levels.
