JUST IN: Nigeria Moves to Upgrade Basic Education Standards Across States
The Federal Government has unveiled fresh plans to upgrade basic education standards across the country in a bid to tackle the persistent challenges of poor learning outcomes, inadequate infrastructure, and shortage of qualified teachers.
The initiative, announced through the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), is targeted at raising the quality of teaching and learning in public schools nationwide. Authorities said the reforms will focus on teacher training and recruitment, modern learning materials, improved school facilities, and greater accountability in state-level implementation.
According to officials, the move is part of ongoing efforts to align Nigeria’s education system with global benchmarks and to ensure every child, regardless of background or location, has access to quality education. Emphasis will also be placed on digital literacy, vocational skills, and inclusive learning for children with disabilities.
Government representatives stressed that state governments will play a crucial role in the success of the reforms, as UBEC funding and federal interventions are tied to effective collaboration with local authorities. They further explained that progress will be closely monitored to ensure that funds are properly deployed to classrooms where they are most needed.
Education experts have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a timely step towards reversing years of decline in basic education. They noted that without urgent intervention, millions of Nigerian children risk being left behind, thereby widening the gap with global peers.
The government has assured Nigerians that the reforms are not just policy statements but a long-term commitment to strengthening human capital development. By raising basic education standards, it hopes to build a stronger foundation for secondary and tertiary education while equipping young learners with the skills needed to thrive in the modern economy.
