FG Unveils Revised Curriculum with Digital Literacy, AI, and Entrepreneurship for Secondary Schools

The Federal Government has introduced a revised national curriculum for junior and senior secondary schools, adding new subjects in digital literacy, programming, artificial intelligence, and entrepreneurship.
The Ministry of Education announced that the updated curriculum will take effect from September 2025, marking what it described as a major step towards preparing Nigerian students for the demands of the global digital economy.
According to the ministry, digital literacy and basic entrepreneurship will now be compulsory subjects at the junior secondary level. “We want every Nigerian child to leave school with the ability to navigate the digital world and think like problem-solvers and entrepreneurs,” an official explained.

The reforms also include the introduction of coding and robotics as part of foundational courses to expose younger students to technology-driven innovation. At the senior secondary level, students will study programming, artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity, alongside existing core subjects.

Another key feature is project-based learning, designed to strengthen practical skills, creativity, and innovation. “This curriculum goes beyond theory,” the ministry stated. “It will empower students to work on real-life projects that solve real-life problems.”
Officials said the curriculum review was informed by industry demands for graduates equipped with 21st-century competencies in technology, creativity, and enterprise. “Nigeria must not be left behind in the global knowledge economy. Our young people deserve the tools to compete, create, and innovate anywhere in the world,” the ministry added.
Implementation, it noted, will include teacher training, provision of learning resources, and partnerships with the private sector to support digital infrastructure in schools.
Education experts have also welcomed the reform. One consultant on curriculum development, Dr. Ifeoma Adebayo, said, “This is the boldest move in Nigeria’s education sector in decades. If implemented effectively, it will prepare our students for jobs that don’t even exist today while reducing unemployment and driving innovation
