Ekiti Students Turn Waste into Fashion Statements
In Ado‑Ekiti, students are showcasing their creativity by transforming discarded materials into stylish fashion pieces, merging sustainability with innovation. This initiative, part of a “Trashion Event Competition” organized by Divine Touch International School in collaboration with the Triple Green Environmental Development Foundation (TGED), encourages young people to rethink waste and embrace eco-friendly practices.
The event drew students, teachers, parents, and environmental officials, including representatives from the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority. Pupils created outfits and accessories using items like sachet water plastics, bottle caps, old fabrics, and newspapers. Awards were presented to the most creative and sustainable designs, celebrating both ingenuity and environmental awareness.
Organizers emphasized that the competition aims to teach students and the broader community that waste can be repurposed into valuable products. The TGED Foundation highlighted the importance of nurturing a sustainability mindset early in life, helping children incorporate environmentally conscious thinking into their everyday routines and future careers.
School officials also noted that the project serves as an educational tool, raising awareness about issues caused by improper waste disposal, such as pollution and flooding, while promoting practical solutions. Events like this help instill positive attitudes toward recycling and environmental responsibility from a young age.
Parents and attendees praised the students’ creativity and the way the initiative combined artistry with eco-consciousness. Many expressed hope that such programs would inspire wider community participation in recycling and upcycling activities.
Overall, the competition not only highlighted talent and artistic innovation but also reinforced the importance of environmental education, encouraging a generation of students to develop sustainable habits and find inventive solutions to waste management challenges.
