Education: Future Leaders Emerge as Governor’s College Clinches Top Spot in Democracy Quiz

Governor’s College has emerged winner of the 10th edition of the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy 2025 in Kano, securing the right to represent the state at the forthcoming North West National Quiz Competition.

This was disclosed in a statement by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam.
According to Adam, the competition was organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), under the supervision of the National Assembly, to broaden young Nigerians’ understanding of the role of the legislature in strengthening democracy.
The quiz, which covered areas such as legislative oversight and accountability, procedures, constitutional governance, and National Assembly performance, featured six schools drawn from Kano’s three senatorial districts: Governor’s College, Government Girls Secondary School Kadawa, Science College Dawakin Tofa, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo, Girls Science and Technical College Sumaila, and Government Secondary School Rano.
Declaring the event open at the Kano State Library Board, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Hon. Suleiman Mukhtar Ishaq Madobi, represented by Assistant Chief Legislative Officer Umar Abdulganiyu, stressed that the House is committed to encouraging such initiatives. “Our door will remain open for our students to gain full knowledge about the best practices of our democracy and other legislative procedures so that they can be in a position to assist in promoting the system one day,” he said.
He added that winners traditionally receive invitations to the House for encouragement ahead of the national stage and noted that schools are welcome to visit the Assembly for excursions to observe legislative activities firsthand.
The State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, represented by the Director of Educational Support Services, Hajiya Halima Sadiya Tukur, praised the National Assembly for prioritizing civic education and youth engagement. “My dear students, your presence here signifies your dedication to learning about the pillars of our democracy and rule of law, legislative process, constitutional governance, and civic responsibility. These are not topics for academic inquiry alone; they are the foundation upon which our nation stands,” he noted.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Library Board, Dr. Kabiru Ado Zakirai, expressed gratitude to both the State and National Assembly for partnering with the Institute to host the program.
Announcing the results, the Director General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar O. Suleiman, represented by State Programme Coordinator Aliyu Abdullahi, declared Governor’s College the winner, followed by Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo in second place and Government Secondary School Rano in third.
Prof. Suleiman recalled that the competition began in 2016 within the Federal Capital Territory before expanding nationwide after a directive from the Institute’s Governing Council. “This 10th edition is the fourth time the competition is being held at the national level,” he said.
Certificates of attendance and prizes were presented to the participating schools at the close of the event.
The statement noted that Governor’s College, established during Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s administration in 2011, has seen its infrastructure restored under Governor Yusuf’s leadership. Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the people of Kano for their continued support in fulfilling campaign promises, particularly in education
