The Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State, Adetola Abubakar, has provided educational materials and financial assistance to pupils and residents across the council area to mark the start of the new academic session.
According to a press statement issued by the council on Saturday, hundreds of pupils benefited from the exercise, which took place on Thursday at the council secretariat. They received back-to-school items including exercise books and other learning materials.
“Parents and guardians were also provided with financial support to help them meet other school-related expenses,” the statement added.
Speaking at the event, Abubakar explained that the initiative was part of her administration’s pledge to make education more accessible while easing the financial burden on families. “We recognise the challenges many parents face at the beginning of every academic year,” she said. “This initiative is to ensure that no child in Agboyi-Ketu is left behind because of a lack of learning materials or financial constraints.”
Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation, noting that the gesture would ease financial stress and motivate pupils to excel academically.
The distribution marks the latest in a series of community-driven projects by Abubakar’s administration, which has prioritised education, youth empowerment, and social welfare in the LCDA.
On August 21, PUNCH Online reported that Abubakar had distributed 300 free General Certificate Examination (GCE) forms to school leavers within the council.
Before assuming office as chairman under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abubakar served as Supervisor for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. She was declared winner of the last council election after securing 42,770 votes, defeating Mr. Salami Taofeek of the Peoples Democratic Party, who scored 1,400 votes, and Mr. Shoyemi Tolulope of the Labour Party, who polled 962 votes
