Edo Catholic College Alumni Revive Alma Mater with ₦3.5 Billion Investment

Alumni of Annunciation Catholic College, Irrua have demonstrated remarkable dedication to their alma mater, investing over ₦3.5 billion to restore and modernize the school. Their efforts have revitalized the once struggling institution, giving it a fresh start and renewed prestige.

At a recent gathering in Lagos, Joseph Ohens, the Global President of the alumni association, emphasized that their intervention was crucial to rescuing the school from near collapse. He described the college’s pre-revival condition as “deplorable,” highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive reconstruction.

“We rebuilt our school from the ground up, and today it stands as one of the leading secondary schools in the country. So far, we have invested ₦3.5 billion in this transformation,” Ohens said.

From Decline to Renewal

Before the alumni stepped in, the college had suffered severe neglect. Parts of the campus were overtaken by overgrown vegetation, and the school operated with just one principal and three teachers serving over 800 students. Determined to restore the institution’s former glory, the alumni launched a phased rebuilding program, renovating classrooms, administrative buildings, and internal roads while upgrading the overall campus environment.

Investing in People and Resources

The restoration effort also focused on staffing and student welfare. The alumni recruited 57 professionals, including teachers, nurses, and doctors, to improve education quality and support services. Funding came largely from contributions by alumni both in Nigeria and abroad, with some individuals donating as much as $500,000.

Preserving the School’s Legacy

The event also marked the launch of a commemorative book, The Making of a Great School, by Dr.Akhimien of Lagos State University. The book documents the college’s history and achievements, ensuring future students can connect with the institution’s rich heritage. Proceeds from the book will support ongoing development projects.

Looking Ahead

While the alumni led the rebuilding efforts, Ohens acknowledged the Edo State Government for creating a supportive environment. He expressed optimism about continued collaboration to provide resources such as transportation and further educational facilities.

The successful revival of Annunciation Catholic College illustrates the transformative power of committed alumni action. Beyond renovated buildings and enhanced infrastructure, the project reflects a renewed commitment to quality education and a lasting legacy for future generations.
